Abstract

In this interview, Professor Fábio Tadeu de Melo Pessoa, from the Federal University of Pará, reflects on his research trajectory in the field of Agrarian History to address a series of key issues related to the peasant movement in the state of Pará, Brazil. Drawing on his academic experience, he reflects on the struggle for land and social rights throughout the 20th century, as well as the significance of popular education in shaping rural political consciousness. He also examines the role played by the Brazilian state—particularly through INCRA and agrarian legislation—and delves into the close relationship between the peasant movement and the Catholic Church. Other relevant topics are also explored throughout the conversation, framing land disputes within this broader Amazonian context.
